A Petroleum-Based Moisture Stripper Hiding in Your Shampoo

Polyethylene glycols — or PEGs — are synthetic petroleum-based compounds used in many shampoos and conditioners as thickeners, softeners, and moisture carriers.

But here’s the issue:

PEGs can strip your hair and scalp of essential moisture, especially when used frequently. Worse, depending on how they’re manufactured, PEGs may be contaminated with ethylene oxide or 1,4-dioxane — substances linked to cancer, organ toxicity, and developmental harm.

They can also disrupt the skin’s natural barrier, which is critical for maintaining a healthy scalp — especially if you're trying to regrow or strengthen hair.

Look out for these on your label:

  • PEG-40

  • PEG-80

  • PEG followed by a number (e.g., PEG-100 Stearate)

  • Ceteareth-20

  • Polysorbate-20 (a PEG derivative)

If you're using The newVital as part of your hair regrowth routine, it's important that your shampoo doesn't undo the progress by drying or weakening your scalp’s foundation.

Safer Alternatives to PEGs:

Aloe Vera Juice or Extract – A natural humectant that delivers hydration and soothing properties without buildup.
Vegetable Glycerin – A plant-based moisture-retainer that keeps both the hair and scalp soft and hydrated.
Coconut Oil Derivatives (like Cetearyl Alcohol) – These fatty alcohols act as emollients and thickeners, offering slip and softness without the petroleum.
Guar Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride – A naturally derived conditioning agent from guar beans that provides excellent detangling and anti-static benefits.
Xanthan Gum or Cellulose – Natural thickening agents that provide texture without the risks of PEGs.

Removing PEGs from your haircare is one of the best steps you can take if you’re dealing with:

  • Dry, flaky scalp

  • Hair breakage or dullness

  • Sensitive or reactive skin

  • Postpartum or hormonal hair loss
